about Leaders in Heels
In the twenty-first century, the role of women in the Bible has been the subject of books, sermons, podcasts, and social media posts. Dr. Paul Cannings’ latest book, Leaders in Heels, highlights women who modeled abandon and devotion to God. For that, they found themselves in Scripture’s divine spotlight.
Cannings sets the record straight on how women were foundational to the forward progress of the Kingdom of God in the Old and New Testaments. Take Bathsheba, who educated and sat enthroned next to a king. Mary of Bethany assembled with men and learned at the feet of Jesus, leaving her sister to busy herself with household affairs (for which the Lord commended Mary).
Mary Magdalene braved Golgotha and later trekked, before sunrise, to the tomb. She conversed with angels, was the first to see and talk to the risen Christ ─ and was the first the Lord commissioned to proclaim news of His resurrection. Phoebe, a courier for the Apostle Paul, braved treacherous roads to deliver his letter to the Romans, singular focus blaring.
Indeed, as though aiming to shatter ancient stereotypes, Jesus Christ elevated the status of women during His earthly ministry. The time is now for Christendom to understand and accept the high value the Lord places on women surrendered to Him.
This book is a must-read for all believers in Jesus Christ. Thus, it is our prayer that readers approach this book with an open mind … and heart.

Editorial Review ★★★★★
In this illuminating and meticulously researched work, Dr. Paul Cannings presents a transformative examination of women’s roles in biblical history, offering fresh perspectives on familiar narratives while uncovering often-overlooked truths. “Leaders in Heels” stands as a masterful contribution to religious scholarship that challenges traditional interpretations while remaining deeply respectful of scriptural authority.
What sets this book apart is Cannings’ remarkable ability to bring ancient stories to vivid life through careful historical context and nuanced textual analysis. His exploration of figures like Bathsheba reveals layers of complexity often missing from traditional tellings, presenting her not merely as a figure in David’s story, but as an influential leader and educator in her own right. The author’s treatment of Mary of Bethany’s choice to study among men offers particularly insightful commentary on gender roles and spiritual devotion in first-century Judaism.
The scholarly depth of this work is matched by its accessibility. Cannings writes with clarity and purpose, making complex historical and theological concepts comprehensible without sacrificing academic rigor. His analysis of Mary Magdalene’s role as the first witness to the resurrection is especially powerful, examining both the historical significance of this choice and its implications for understanding Jesus’s radical approach to gender norms of His time.
Perhaps most compelling is how the book weaves together individual narratives to create a broader tapestry of women’s contributions to biblical history. The section on Phoebe’s crucial role in early Christian communication networks provides fascinating insights into the practical realities of spreading the gospel in the ancient world, while highlighting the courage and dedication of women in the early church.
“Leaders in Heels” achieves something remarkable: it manages to be both scholarly and devotional, historical and relevant to contemporary discussions. By examining these biblical narratives through a fresh lens, Cannings encourages readers to reconsider long-held assumptions while deepening their understanding of scripture’s rich complexity.
This work is essential reading not just for those interested in women’s roles in religious history, but for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of biblical narrative and its relevance to modern faith communities. It challenges readers to engage with scripture in new ways while remaining true to its fundamental messages about human worth and divine purpose.
