DEFIANCE PRESS & PUBLISHING SIGNS BRENT FURROW FOR DEBUT NOVEL “THE BOY WHO RODE THE RAILS”

CONROE, TX – May 9, 2025 – Defiance Press & Publishing is proud to announce the signing of author Brent Furrow for his debut novel, “The Boy Who Rode the Rails.” This heartwarming coming-of-age story set in 1960s Alabama combines historical significance with personal discovery as it follows a young man’s journey to connect with the father he never knew through the restoration of a forgotten Civil War-era locomotive.

In “The Boy Who Rode the Rails,” readers are transported to Paxton, Alabama in 1961, where a seventeen-year-old narrator lives in the shadow of his father—a railroad stationmaster who died in WWII before he was born. When a legal twist grants his family ownership of an abandoned rail yard, he discovers the Tullahoma, a hidden Civil War-era locomotive his father had begun restoring decades earlier.

Alongside his girlfriend Samantha and history teacher Mr. Smith, the young protagonist works to bring the Tullahoma back to life for the town’s centennial celebration while navigating first love, small-town politics, and his uncertain future. The restoration becomes more than just salvaging history—it becomes his connection to a father he never met and a journey to understanding his own potential.

“Brent Furrow’s debut novel captured our hearts immediately with its authentic portrayal of small-town Southern life and the powerful themes of legacy and self-discovery,” said Lisa Woodward, Director of Publishing at Defiance Press. “This remarkable story celebrates American heritage, family connections, and the transformative power of honoring our past. We’re thrilled to bring this exceptional novel to readers who appreciate stories rooted in faith, history, and the American spirit.”

Furrow brings small-town America to life through stories that bridge historical significance with personal discovery. Drawing inspiration from his fascination with American railroad history and rural Southern communities, he crafts characters whose journeys resonate with readers of all backgrounds. When not writing, Furrow dedicates time to historical preservation projects and mentoring young writers.

“The Boy Who Rode the Rails” will be available for purchase in fall 2025 through major retailers, independent bookstores, and online at www.DefiancePress.com.
