Rick Steeby brings authentic frontier experience to his debut mystery novel. Raised in Alaska, he spent his youth hunting, fishing, and flying planes across the Last Frontier’s vast wilderness. After serving as a military policeman from 1972-1975, Steeby worked security during the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and in the North Slope oil fields, experiencing firsthand the rough-and-tumble world of Alaska’s resource extraction industries.
His law enforcement career with the Anchorage Police Department saw him rise from patrol officer to detective and crime scene technician, giving him deep insight into investigative procedures and criminal psychology. Later earning his BS degree at fifty, Steeby transitioned to IT work before spending his final working years as a building contractor. This diverse background—from Alaska’s frontier culture to modern law enforcement—infuses his writing with gritty authenticity and procedural accuracy.
Now retired and writing full-time, Steeby draws on decades of Alaskan experience to craft mysteries that capture both the breathtaking beauty and deadly dangers of America’s last frontier. He brings the same attention to detail that served him as a detective to create compelling characters and intricate plots that honor both the western and mystery traditions.
