TJ Boyle grew up with learning disabilities during an era when public schools offered little support for students facing such challenges. His academic struggles were immense, reaching a devastating low point in ninth grade when a junior high teacher accused him of plagiarism for two fictional short stories he had written. Despite his mother’s testimony as a witness to his authorship, Boyle was forced to rewrite both pieces from scratch. Though he received A’s on the new stories, no apology ever came.
That experience, while painful, revealed something significant: Boyle’s writing was compelling enough that educators couldn’t believe it was his own work. Rather than being discouraged by their suspicion, he chose to see it as unintended validation of his potential.
Through college and into a successful thirty-year career in medical equipment sales, Boyle dedicated himself to developing tools and strategies to work with, rather than against, his learning disabilities. The skills he built during those decades of persistence and adaptation have become the foundation of his writing practice.
Boyle’s disabilities haven’t disappeared—they remain constant companions. But he has learned to navigate around them, finding new ways to access the stories that have always lived within him. Now, as a full-time writer, he brings the same determination that carried him through classrooms and conference rooms to every page he crafts.
His work is shaped by a lifetime of being underestimated, of fighting for recognition, and of discovering that our greatest challenges often become our most valuable strengths.
